I don't know how, and I don't know why, but over the last couple of weeks I have received numerous emails with inappropriate content. The name of the sender always looks legitimate - and so I foolishly open them up. I started a myspace account several months ago so that I could leave comments on my brother's myspace. Whenever somebody wants to be your "friend" they send you a request for you to add them to your list. So when I get these emails from people I don't recognize, I always think, "Maybe this is from a friend in the past who has a different name through marriage. I better open it." A couple of times, that has been the case. However, most of the time it is a message full of sexual content and topless women. It's ridiculous!
Many of my former students keep in touch with me through email. Most of them have their own email address. I just want to send out a warning to all of their parents. Please be careful about what your child sees on the internet. They may not be looking for porn or any other evil, but you can be sure that it is looking for them. Every time I get one of these emails, I think, "Do my kids receive these too?" I have never gone to a site that would link me to such horrible stuff, yet I am somehow a target. Please be careful! Hopefully most filters will catch this garbage. Communicate with your kids and look at their accounts - they too may be receiving unwanted emails.

Just for the record, opening those e-mails is like chopping off the hydra's head. Everytime you do it, you can expect to get more. On the bright side, if you completely stop opening those e-mails, they will eventually die off. Eventually.
Oh, and, from what I've heard, less-than-scrupulous websites will sometimes sell your e-mail address to the kinds of websites that send you e-mails full of topless women. Gotta be careful who you give you address to.
Josh,
Thanks for the insight. It is true that as soon as you go to a site that asks for your email address you can be sure you will receive a ton of bulk mail. I get about 300 emails a day. It's ridiculous. I am thinking about getting a whole new account - its just I've had this one for like 6 years.
