Useless Information

Saturday night Ben and I went out to dinner with several other couples from the "Young Marrieds" Sunday school class at Highview. While eating dinner at Chili's couples began talking about how long they had been married. We all went around the table and told how many years we had been married. To my surprise, we had been married the longest at 3.5 years. Wow! At our church in Saginaw we were one of the youngest married couples. Things have changed. After dinner we went to Thom and Lesley's house to play the Newlywed Game. Do you remember that game show from the 1970s (I think that was the decade)? We had a blast. I can't tell you how hard we laughed. It was funny to watch some couples answer questions so opposite of their spouse. Some of the questions were kind of hard too. Here are some of the questions we had to answer:
How many people would your husband say can sit on your bed?
What would your husband say he was least impressed with on your first date?
What street would your husband like to live on?
How would your wife finish this statement "My ____ is always cold."
What city would your wife like to visit?
What is the latest news your spouse has shared with you about his/her work place?

I can't think of very many of the questions right now. Regardless of the questions, we had a really good time! I am also pleased to say that Ben and I won the game - more than once (we played several times because we were having so much fun).

I'll end this post by answering some questions my cousin Jess emailed me. Apparently the point of these questions is to get to know your friends better.

1. Egg Nog or Hot Chocolate? If I had to choose I would say Hot Chocolate, though I don't really drink either one.

2. Does Santa wrap presents or just sit them under the tree? Santa who?

3. Colored lights on tree/house or white? White

4. Do you hang mistletoe? No

5. When do you put your decorations up? After Thanksgiving

6.What is your favorite holiday dish? I don't know that I have a favorite. Although since my mom passed away my sister and I have started to make chimichangas for our holiday dinner. My mom was the best cook and her chimi's were our favorite!

7. Favorite Holiday memory as a child: Playing with my brother and sister. Kim was the Queen of Christmas, I was the princess of Christmas, and Korey was the dog of Christmas. We still laugh about that.

8. When and how did you learn the truth about Santa? A girl a few years YOUNGER than me who was from a Christian family told me Santa wasn't real. (She also told me that the devil was happy because I listened to "New Kids on the Block.") I was devasted! I asked my dad if it was true and he told me we would talk about it later. That night my parents sat me at the kitchen table and revealed the awful truth - at least that's how I felt about it at that time. I remember asking, "Who gives us the presents?" Dad said, "you're looking at him." I then frantically asked, "Are you the toothfairy?"
Yes.
"Are you the Easter Bunny?"
Yes.
I was soooo disappointed. My parents had always taught me that we celebrated Jesus' birth at Christmas, but all of our attention went to Santa. Christmas no longer seemed special when I found out he wasn't real. I should also add that I was a pretty naive child. I mean, it was a few years after this that I found out that there really wasn't any gold at the end of the rainbow.

9. Do you open a gift on Christmas Eve? I remember opening one gift on Christmas eve a couple of times. Once my sister and I woke up really early and wanted to start opening gifts. We went and asked mom and dad. They told us we could open one gift and then we had to wait until they got out of bed to open the rest. (It was like 5 a.m.) Kim picked out her gift. I picked out mine. We quickly opened them. Kim got dish towels and I got a pooper scooper! We had chores at a very young age which obviously consisted of doing the dishes and cleaning up after the dog.

10. How do you decorate your Christmas Tree? Lights and ornaments. I don't decorate with anything that has Santa on it.

11. Snow! Love it or Dread it? I don't dread it, but I don't like driving in it. I do think it is beautiful though!

12. Can you ice skate? No. Michael Saunders tried to teach me once and I about killed him because I got so mad. Ben tried teaching me a few years ago too, but I freaked out every time he let go of me. When you grow up being called "Clutzy Kelly" you become a little scared to try anything that requires some coordination.

13. Do you remember your favorite gift? There isn't one gift that stands out. Some of the most memorable gifts were a bike, a typewriter (I wanted to be a writer), and money from my mom to send me to France.

15. What is your favorite Holiday Dessert? Can't say that I really have one. My Aunt Linda Feldpausch makes some great sugar cookies!!

16. What is your favorite holiday tradition? I love getting together at Ben's parent's house. We spend the whole day there. We don't eat dinner until like 8 or 9 and we don't start opening presents until about 11:00. I used to think that was sort of odd, but now I like it because it's unique to our family. We also read the Christmas story together. My siblings and I also get together and spend an evening laughing, eating, playing games, and enjoying each other's company. Last year Ben and I went to the Rescue Mission to serve Christmas dinner to the homeless. I really enjoyed it.

17. What tops your tree? An angel

18. Which do you prefer giving or receiving? I know the correct answer is "giving." I do like to give, but I wouldn't be telling the truth if I said I didn't like to receive. What can I say? I'm human. Honestly though, I do prefer giving.

19. What is your favorite Christmas Song? Hark the Herald, maybe. I like lots of songs!

20. Candy Canes! Love them or Hate them? I don't eat them. I have never cared for them.

***Copy these questions and answer them on your blog. I would love to read your answers!

Thanks for the Christmas-y post, Kelly. That story about you and your sister opening up towels and a pooper-scooper - that's hilarious! If I have time before we hit the road for WI I'll post these questions with my answers. That newlywed game sounds like a riot!

I laughed out loud when I read the story of your discover that Santa was not for real. That must've been a big blow - finding out that santa, the tooth fairy and the easter bunny were all make-believe. all in one night. :)

I had fun finding out all that useful information. :) I have to ask, though, does Ben's family include any small children? The late night tradition would be a nightmare for Luke. :) Actually though, this year, I think we're going to have the kids open their presents, then put them to bed, then open our presents. That'll probably be a pretty late night too.

Merry Christmas!

Katie,
The youngest person in Ben's family is his brother who is 18. I'm not sure what we will do when there are kids around. Ben's mom likes to go all out for Christmas with a huge dinner and gifts. However, she doesn't wrap the gifts until Christmas day. Therefore, the reason we start so late is because we have to wait for her to finish wrapping. She's either upstairs getting the presents ready or in the kitchen cooking. Consequently it gets pretty late before we start. I hope to find your answers to these questions on your blog. :)

1. Egg Nog or Hot Chocolate? Egg Nog
2. Does Santa wrap presents or just sit them under the tree? Presents appear under the tree about a week before Christmas (No Santa)
3. Colored lights on tree/house or white? White
4. Do you hang mistletoe? No
5. When do you put your decorations up? I don't. Cathy starts after Thanksgiving.
6.What is your favorite holiday dish? Homemade cranberry relish!
7. Favorite Holiday memory as a child: The year my parents gave me a Carrom Board with 101 games. My Dad was out of work and we had been told we would get very little. I really wanted it, but didn't expect it. I know it was a big sacrifice for them. I still have it 50 years later (though not the playing parts). To me, it says Mom and Dad love me, even after all these years and though they now do it in Heaven.
8. When and how did you learn the truth about Santa? Never remember thinking of Santa as anything but a pretend figure
9. Do you open a gift on Christmas Eve? No. That is heresy!
10. How do you decorate your Christmas Tree? See my blog site. Cathy has two trees with different types of ornaments, butr white lights on both.
11. Snow! Love it. Beautiful. The deeper the better. Best if we are stuck at home for a couple days. Right after News Years Day though I want sun and heat.
12. Can you ice skate? Yes. It is probably as close as Cathy and I ever got to dancing. We used to skate before we were married and dancing was considered "sinful." But somehow skating was OK. Maybe it was all those clothes.
13. Do you remember your favorite gift? My favorite gift was a big stocking that I sewed myself and filled with small items for Cathy when we were teens. My most memorable gift to myself is described above.
15. What is your favorite Holiday Dessert? Can't say I have ever found one I don't like, but Todd Losee sure makes some great fudge.
16. What is your favorite holiday tradition? Just getting together with family. I do like to read Gift of the Magi by O'Henry. After a thousand times (more or less), I still cry at the sacrificial love.
17. What tops your tree? An angel
18. Which do you prefer giving or receiving? I honestly enjoy both because I enjoy seeing the joy on others' faces when I open their gift. It is most fun to open those little hand made gifts from small children and see their faces when you tell them "Its just what I always wanted."
19. What is your favorite Christmas Song? I like them all, but especially those about the Savior. Best when done with violin or Sarah Glupker on the piano.
20. Candy Canes! I like giving them to kids. Once in a while I will suck on one myself.

Very entertaining post! The newly wed game sounded fun:) And I love the idea of dish towels and a pooper scooper for presents- what a let down though when you're only allowed to open one and that is what you get! The santa story is very funny and very sad:)
