Where did you get your baby furniture?

I need help! I need baby furniture, but I don't want to pay a ton for it. I would prefer to have a crib, dresser, and changing table that matches. I know everybody says, "Go to craigslist.com" or "Check ebay." Well, I've tried that. I can't seem to find sets, only pieces. Furthermore, I don't really know what I am getting or what condition it's going to be in when it arrives and there are no returns. I have tried on-line stores like Target, Sears, JC Penney, Babies R Us, Baby Depot, Wal-Mart and so on, but again - it's hard to tell what kind of quality you're looking at on a screen. I've checked out a few garage sales, but again, people are only selling their crib, not the entire set.

Does anybody have any suggestions? Where did you get your furniture? Would you buy it there again if you could do it over? How much should I reasonably expect to pay? Any comments are appreciated!

We purchased our bed at Baby Depot, best price and same crib yet cheaper than babies r us. The changing table as you have seen was at meijers, we had closets so anyold dresser fit right in there. It is hard finding the one you like but we had our luck at burlington/baby depot.

Also the plus about our crib, it has a big drawer underneath and turns into a toddler bed, and headboard for a double bed !!! 3 in one :)

Kelly - You probably don't know who I am (Pam Wickman's cousin and long-time friend of the Glupker family). I couldn't help but see your post about baby furniture. My husband and I are only 9 weeks along, but we too were wondering what to do about furniture. His sister just gave me a brand new crib, but I don't have a changing table or dresser to match. One option I've found is getting garage sale items and painting them - if you're interested in the work. I've seen it turn out really well. Also, we just moved to Michigan from Kentucky - Cincinnati area! So, say hi to the south for us!

Matching furniture! Now why didn't we think of that?!

Kelly,
I've heard the IKEA has good deals on furniture. It's in Canton, MI. I stopped in one day and they have nice furniture at good prices.

Have you tried Craigs list in your area? I know IKEA has good prices, but I have NOT been overly impressed with their furniture as we have a dresser that is coming apart after a short time . . . BUT we did get our bunk beds from there for a good price, and they are fine so far. We got our crib at Baby's R Us, but it was pricey. Baby Depot does have a lot of choices, and storage under the crib is a huge plus! Our crib also turns into a toddler bed although we have not used it for that yet. . .anyway, those are my two cents--Good luck.

Used baby beds are always a great deal! Just be sure to purchase a good brand new mattress, that's what we did. Nothing elso matched as they were hand-me-downs...but the price was right and their rooms always looked nice. We painted them. At least I though they looked nice.
That's my two cents!

My in-laws bought us a matching crib, changing table & dresser on ebay for $500. I've been happy with the quality. I opted out of a crib that transitions to a toddler bed, because I figured that by the time my oldest was in it, I'd hopefully need a crib for another baby. I guess you just have to keep your eye on craigslist & ebay and wait for the good stuff.

We got our crib and dresser from USA Baby as a present from my mom. The quality is VERY GOOD! My sis-in-law gave us a changing table first so we matched the new crib and dresser to that. If you don't have the money to buy new, I agree with what others say, keep your eyes peeled at all the places for deals and then see if you can paint or stain them to match.

Have you looked at freecycle?

We're working on this now too.
Since we have little space, I'm opting for a changing table with drawers so that it can be the dresser also. If you have a closet for the nursery, some of those organizers can be great for storage.
As for the crib, we're searching for woodworking plans so that Geoff will construct one for us. I'd like the convertible type. We probably won't use the full bed until much later on, due to the fact that we're hoping to use the crib again.
The difference between Craigslist & Ebay is that you can go look at the furniture & then decide if you want it or not with Craigslist.
Maybe you could just pick out the styles & colors you like online & visit the stores in person. There's usually a display model, and just feeling the furnitre will give an idea of the quality.

Ok I see you already have a lot of comments on this and I'm a little late coming in, but I Thought I'd throw my two cents in anyways. Have you gone to the actual store yet to see any of the furniture (like Sears, Penney's, etc.) instead of looking at it online? We got ours at a place called USA Baby. We got a crib (that turns into a toddler bed and then can be used for a headboard later on), a changing table and a dresser for $1,000 altogether. Unforunately, the quality isn't fantastic, but we didn't realize that until after we got it home, but it serves it's purpose. I don't know if it's just the set we got or if it's all the furniture in that store, but there is one in Louisville, KY. I don't know how close that is to you, but it's the only one in KY. But if it's close maybe you can check it out and at least get a better idea of what you're looking for, if you don't find anything you like.

Hey Kelli~
My name is Traci Trogen ( My son Kyle is Mike's friend) We are getting rid of everything we have not used that is just cluttering up our basement. We have a dresser/changing table ( the changing pad attaches to the top of the dresser ) and crib we are getting rid of if you are at all interested. It is Jenni Lind style. I can send you pic's if you would like. If not please do not worry about it. I tried getting hold of Mike and Debbi but the house phone is busy and no one is answering the cell phones, so they could take a look and tell you what they thought. We did use them through each of our children but they are in good condition. My parents bought them new for Kyle.
Although he is almost 18 ha ha ha . Anyway, just an offer.
Take care!
Trac
